Gen X has a complicated relationship with working from home. On one hand, we like the flexibility, as it lets us handle responsibilities without feeling chained to an office. On the other hand, we were raised in a culture that valued showing up as proof of commitment, so remote work sometimes feels...less legitimate. We don’t struggle with productivity the way some younger workers do, but boundaries? That’s another story. Work bleeds into everything, and since we’ve never been great at setting hard limits, we often find ourselves answering emails at midnight or working through dinner. Remote work is supposed to give us more balance, but in reality, it often just means work follows us everywhere. And we let it.

Personally, I've worked at home since just before the pandemic. It started out as one day a week, then two, then three -- then pandemic. I never returned afterward. Frankly, it's done the business well, being able to get rid of offices and the nonsense that goes along with them. And somehow it exposed the people that don't really accomplish much. But with that comes being chained to my phone, or so it seems.

Make sense? Do you work from home?
