Alright, let’s talk GRUNGE, the music that slapped the world in the face and made everything sound real again.
Mother Love Bone? Absolute legends. Pre-grunge, sure, but that’s splitting hairs. Their sound was dripping with everything that made the genre special before it even had a name. Andrew Wood was a rock star in the truest sense, and it’s a tragedy we never got to see how far they could’ve gone. Quick confession: his grave was the first place I visited when I moved to Seattle.
Alice in Chains? Dark, raw, and somehow both beautiful and filthy at the same time. Layne Staley’s voice was absolutely haunting. Jar of Flies is a masterpiece, period.
Pearl Jam? Yeah, call it mainstream, call it dad rock, whatever. It’s still incredible. They took the bones of grunge and added depth, made it more expansive, gave it staying power. Eddie Vedder’s voice alone could shake the walls, but what really set them apart was their songwriting. They weren’t just angsty. They had something to say. Another confession: I visited Jeremy Delle's grave many times as a kid.
And yeah, Nirvana. Look, they were great, they changed everything, but the reason they’re put on this untouchable pedestal? That’s largely because of Kurt Cobain’s death. If he’d lived, people would talk about them like they do Pearl Jam, with respect, admiration, but without the sacred glow. Nevermind was huge, but let’s be real, there’s a lot of “what could’ve been” mixed into their legacy.
Still, the whole grunge era was lightning in a bottle. It wasn’t polished, it wasn’t perfect, and that’s what made it work.
What are some of your favorites from the grunge era??
FUCKING LEGENDARY
